The BNP has condemned the banning of its key ally Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami by the government under an executive order, terming it unconstitutional.

“Banning any political party without following international standards, fair, credible, acceptable and impartial investigation is not only unjust but also unconstitutional,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a written statement on Thursday night.

He said the government would not be able to divert the attention of the people from the students’ movement through these “undemocratic” acts.

“We are calling upon all irrespective of their party affiliation to intensify the movement to ensure the fall of this government,” Fakhrul added.
