Newly appointed Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed said on Monday that justice has not been served for the past 10 years, and the nation now stands on ruins.

He made these remarks while addressing a reception hosted by the Attorney General’s Office and the Supreme Court Bar at the Appellate Division.

The Chief Justice warned that from now on, strict measures will be taken against any form of injustice.

“I would fulfil my responsibilities with integrity, respecting the victory achieved through the immense sacrifices of students and the public,” he said.

Urging lower court judges to work without fear or intimidation, Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed said, “The victims of enforced disappearances and murders are still waiting for justice.”

A minute of silence was observed in the Appellate Division to honour those who lost their lives during the anti-discrimination student movement.

Earlier in the day, Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar. He then visited the Central Shaheed Minar at 8:50am, where he laid a wreath to honour the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement and those killed in the anti-discrimination student movement.

Among others present during the tribute were Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam of the Appellate Division and several High Court judges.
