Ban on Jamaat-Shibir likely to be withdrawn Tuesday

The interim government of Bangladesh is likely to withdraw the ban imposed by the previous Awami League government on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir on Tuesday.
The information was confirmed by lawyer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Adv Mohammad Shishir Manir, while speaking to the media on Monday.
Earlier, the then government banned the party and its all affiliate organizations through a gazette notification issued by the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry on August 1.
The party banned decision was taken after a meeting (29 July) of 14 party chaired by AL President and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Ganabhaban during the recent student movement.
The gazette said the government “believes that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir, and all their affiliates are involved in terrorist activities; Therefore, the government, by virtue of Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, banned Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir, including all their affiliates as political parties.
Lawyer Shishir Manir said, ” After the fall of fascist government on August 5, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was invited to the Army Chief’s office and Bangabhaban along with other political parties to discuss further issues. Jamaat has played a significant role in forming the interim government and has been working on reforming the country.”
“A meeting was held between Chief adviser and Jamaat-e-Islam on August 12. The decision was taken from the meeting that the necessity steps would be taken to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Following this, several meetings were held with the government officials to discuss the legal process in the matter. A panel has since been formed with three members. As we know, the legal procedures have been completed in this regard,” he added
“The government will issue a new notification as soon as possible, potentially even tomorrow, reversing the decision of the previous government,” the lawyer added.
