Ex-minister Shajahan Khan lands in jail over killing of youth

A court here today sent to jail former shipping minister Shajahan Khan in a case lodged over the killing of Abdul Motalib, 14, in the capital’s Dhanmandi area during the recent anti-discrimination student movement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Haider passed the order as police produced him before the court after the end of his two out of seven-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind the bars till the end of the probe.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahmed on September 6 had placed Shajahan Khan, also Awami League presidium member, on seven-day remand in the case. Khan was arrested from the capital’s Dhanmandi area on September5.

Abdul Motalib joined student-people’s procession in the capital’s Dhanmandi area on August 4. He was shot on chest and throat as police opened fire on the procession.

Motalib’s father Abdul Matin filed the case with Dhanmandi Police Station against 176, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Shajahan Khan.
