The closing and award-giving ceremony of two-day long IEEE Computer Society, Bangladesh Chapter Summer Symposium 2022 was held at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University (BSMRAAU), Bangladesh’s first public university for aviation and aerospace studies and research at its Dhaka campus on Saturday, says a press release.
Vice Chancellor Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Nazrul Islam was present as Chief Guest at the closing session while Air Vice Marshal Mahmud Hussain (Retd), expert of BSMRAAU was present as Special Guest.
Dr Mohammad Kaykobad, distinguished Professor of BRAC University, was the guest of honour at this flagship event.
Prof Dr M Sohel Rahman, Department of CSE, BUET was the Organizing Chair and Prof Dr Mohammad Shamsul Arefin, of DIU, acted as technical chair of the event. Dr Md. Saidur Rahman presented the keynote paper titled, “online facility assignment problem.”
The symposium aimed to provide the young researchers with a platform to showcase their ongoing research ideas to receive valuable feedback from experts to improve the quality of the work and achieve more meaningful results.
Over 400 young researchers from 48 Universities in eight countries presented a total of 149 abstracts in this two-day-long symposium. The authors presented their papers in 23 technical sessions, held online. Prizes were given to the authors of the top four papers.
The symposium themes were aligned with the key concepts of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The speakers observed that most of the research themes overlap several programmes taught in BSMRAAU ranging from aerospace and avionics engineering and aviation safety to satellite technology and space law. Mentionable that the seminar for the first time included “ICT in Satellite and Aerospace Engineering” as one of the thematic tracks.
The Vice Chancellor in his speech noted that BSMRAAU’s indulgence to host the event was intuitive and natural. He observed that, more than any other sector, the future trajectory of the aviation and aerospace industry is inherently linked to the integration of industry 4.0-related technologies. “The scale, scope, and complexity of the Fourth Industrial Revolution demand that BSMRAAU remains forward-looking and research-driven, serving as a strategic tool for the nation to produce skilled human resources and cutting edge research” – the VC added.
The VC thanked the University Grant Commission for their generous contribution and the IEEE Computer Society Bangladesh Chapter for according this opportunity for BSMRAAU to engage with the much wider community.
Prof Dr M Sohel Rahman in his speech briefly highlighted the history, goals and characteristics of the summer symposium. He observed that BSMRAAU’s participation and support in hosting this signature event have marked a new milestone and hoped that such collaboration will continue in future.
Prof Dr Md Saidur Rahman in his keynote presentation introduced several online algorithms for the facility assignment problems on various metric spaces, performed their competitive analysis and highlighted the bounds on competitive ratios of those algorithms.
The technical chair of the symposium Prof Dr Mohammad Shamsul Arefin in his speech stressed the need to develop the young generation to deal with different frontier technologies. We need to develop policies and implement the policies focusing on the frontier technologies – he added.
The session ended with a vote of thanks by the Pro Vice-Chancellor to all session chairs, Committee members, volunteers, participants and contributing authors with the hope that this initiative may inspire the young researchers to produce new knowledge and cutting-edge innovation.
