The Election Commission (EC) has filed a petition with the apex court, pleading for allowing them to withdraw an appeal against the registration of “Ganasamhati Andolon” (Peoples Solidarity Movement) as a political party, in 2022.
The EC in its plea said they are no longer willing to continue the appeal case in this regard, paving the way for giving registration to Ganasamhati Andolon as per the High Court verdict.
“There will be no legal bar to register the Ganasamhati Andolon as a political party,” Lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua told the newsmen present at the Supreme Court premises this morning.
Social activist Zonayed Saki, also the convenor of the party, was present among others at that time.
“When Ganasamhati Andolon applied for registration as a political party in 2019, the then EC rejected the application. A writ was filed in the High Court against the EC. The High Court, however ordered the EC to allow the party to register. On June 6, 2022, the Election Commission filed an appeal to the Appellate Division seeking suspension of the High Court’s decision,” he added.
“We hope that the EC will soon issue a notification in this regard,” Barrister Barua said.
