Freedom Fighter Subedar Major (retd) Abdul Hafiz was laid to eternal rest with state honour at his family graveyard in Dakshin Surma upazila of the district on Friday. He died of old age complications at around 9:30 pm on Thursday. He was 96. He was given guard of honour at Baldi Central Jame Masjid premises ground around 12 am and his namaj-e-janaza was held there. Later, he was buried at family graveyard.
UNO of Dakshin Surma Upazila Nusrat Laila Neera, BGB 48 Sylhet Battalion Subedar Kabir Ahmad, Dakshin Surma Police Station Officer In-Charge (Investigation) Sumon Chowdhury, Sylhet Sadar Upazila Freedom Fighter Commander Alhaj Irrshad Ali, Dakshin Surma Upazila Freedom Fighter Commander Alkash Ali were present here.
Sylhet 3 Constituency MP Habibur Rahman Habib, South Surma Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Maulana Mahbubur Rahman, Dakshin Surma Upazila Awami League President Vir Muktijodha Saiful Alam, Lalabazar Union Parishad Former Chairman Khairul spoke about the working life of the deceased in a short gathering before the funeral at the central Jame Masjid premises. Afian Chowdhury, Principal of Dakshin Surma Government College Matiur Rahman, Organizing Secretary of Dakshin Surma Upazila Awami League Kamal Uddin Russell, prominent businessman Alhaj Tafjjul Islam, district BNP leader Lokman Ahmad, former chairman of Tetli Union Parishad Alhaj Mainul Islam spoke on behalf of the deceased’s family.
Abu Jafar Mahin, the grandson of the deceased led the funeral prayers. Late Abdul Hafiz was the Founder President of South Surma Degree College and Founder President of Baldi Adarsh Multipurpose High School, Founder President of Baldi Ibtedayi Madrasa and was involved in many social service educational institutions. After the funeral, the body of the deceased was buried in the family cemetery.
