3 dacoits held
Chittagong Metropolitan Police arrested three dacoits with fire arms and ammunitions from different area in the city on Friday night. Police recovered a single barrel guns, a pistol, four rounds of bullets, two daggers and different kinds of knives. The arrestees were identified as Arman alias Jishan, 28, Fazlul Karim,30,Mamun,26. Shahjahan Kabir, Officer in Charge of Chandgaon thana said police arrested them at Kuaish area in the city and Boalkhali upazila on Friday night .
The arrestees are members of an organized dacoit gang in the city and its adjacent district, Shahjahan Kabir added. Police said the arrestees in primary interrogation confessed that they were taking preparation to commit a robbery in a office in the city.
A case was filed in this connection.
Woman strangled to death
Robbers are said to have strangled a woman to death at her home in Chittagong.
Police said the victim, Parvin Akter, 32, lived with her son in an apartment at the port city’s Roufabad area. Her husband is an expatriate.
Akter’s brother-in-law ‘Mamun’ rushed her to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital early on yesterday , where the doctors declared her dead, Bayozid Police Station Sub Inspector Ramadhan Chandra Das said.
“Mamun, who lives in another apartment in the same building, claimed that robbers had broken into the apartment and locked the son in the bathroom before strangling Parvin (Akter) to death. He said that the robbers made off with gold ornaments,” said policeThe brother-in-law was being questioned over the incident.
UCBL official in jail over money laundering
A court in Chittagong directed to send a official of United Commercial Bank Ltd to jail custody after his surrender in a case of money laundering yesterday. The alleged official named Egnr. Md. Golam Kabir. Senior Special Judge Md. Shah Noor in a verdict directed to send him in jail. Engr. Golam Kabir is the Managing Director of UCBL’s sister concern Geotic Survey Company, ACC counsel Advocate Mesbahuddin chowdhury said. Court sources said Golam Kabir helped to a BNP leader and importer Ali Abbas for borrowing loan of Tk.18 crores on plea of import of foodgrains from UCBL , Khatungonj branch following the submit of false information of a mortgaged properties by the survey company during the period of 2009 to 2012. Later this amount of money was trafficked to abroad through money laundering , sources said. A case in connection filed to the Kotwali thana in city on January 24, 2013 by the Assistant Director of ACC Hqs Mahbubul Alam as plaintiff under section 4(2)/3 of Money Laundering Act. Importer Ali Abbas made main accused alongwtih 7 others including Golam Kabir, sources said. Counsel of the ACC Mesbauddin chowdhury told that the main accused Abbas now in jail and Golam Kabir sent to jail yesterday after his surrender before the court. Mentionable that accused six others now under bail of High court, counsel sources said.
Karnaphuli Upazila to function soon:Saifuzzama
State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman chowdhury MP said the proposed Karnaphuli Upazila will be implemented very shortly . He said Prime Minister has consented to form a new upazila under the name of Karnaphuli. He disclosed it while addressing the inauguration ceremony of Julda Union Parishad office and Julda Shah Mirpur Highschool academic bhaban as chief guest on Saturday. He also mentioned that Karnaphuli Upazila was the dream of my father late Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu and his dream is going to be in reality shortly. He further said after implementation of karnaphuli tunnel, economic zone and KEPZ in Anowara upazila, the entire south Chittagong to be turned into a prosperous zone in all respect. Among others, UNO of Anowara Rokey Parvin, former AL president of Karnaphuli thana Mohammad Ali, South Chittagong AL leaders Faruk chowdhury, MN Islam also spoke on the occasion.
