Floods damage Aus paddy, other crops worth Tk 170 m in Sylhet Div

Standing Aus paddy and other summer crops worth Tk 170 million were damaged in two districts of Sylhet Division due to floods during the last four weeks.Kurigram Flood

official sources said. Tk 110 million in Sylhet and Tk 60 million in Sunamganj. However, the Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts suffered negligibly.

Deputy Director of DAE, Sylhet, Dr Mamunur Rashid said, About 4600 hectraes of land went inundated during the period in the districts of Sylhet and Sunamganj, The number of affected farmers in these districts is about 42,000 and over 18,000 respectively.

Of the total, standing Aus paddy on 1552 hecatres in Sylhet and 525 hectares in the district of Sunamganj were inundated while Transplant Aman seedbed on 1357 hecatres in Sylhet and 733 hecatres in Sunamganj were inundated and damaged. The other croplands include, broadcast Aman and winter vegetables, the official informed.

The affected areas in Sylhet include, Gowainghat, Jaintapur, Balaganj, Kanaight, Zakiganj Beanibazar and Golapganj upazilas.

In the district of Sunamganj, the badly affected areas are in Doarabazar, Biswambharpur and Sunamganj Sadar. The loss has preliminarily been estimated to be worth over tk 60 million, the senior official informed further.

Meanwhile, the farmers have demanded immediate supply of seed of Transplanted Aman, fertiliser and fish fries and for taking up rehabilitation programme in a bid to recouping the huge loss.

Arrest warrant issued against Ragib Ali,

including son & daughter


A court in Sylhet has issued arrest warrant against five persons including industrialist Ragib Ali and his son & daughter.

Man hacked to death

Some unknown miscreants hacked a stone labour to death at Bholaganj under border upazila Comapiganj early Thursday in the district.

Police recovered the body from Kalabari near Dhalai river of the upazila around 2:30 am Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Babul Mia, 35, son of Abdul Hamid of Babandor village of Golamanda union under Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari district. He used to work as Boma Machine driver at a stone query of Bholaganj.

Companiganj thana officer in-charge Bayes Alam said Babul went out in the night for a nature’s call when some unknown miscreants hacked him to death.

On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent it to Osmani Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.

HC asked to Govt

why Ariful should not be granted bail


The High Court issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why suspended Sylhet city mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury should not be granted bail in the former Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria murder case.

Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah comprising an HC bench issued the rule following a petition on Tuesday.

The government has been asked to reply to the rule within 10 days.

Earlier on May 17, the High Court rejected a bail petition of Ariful Haque Chowdhury in the Shah AMS Kibria murder case.

On January 27, 2005, at  Baidder Bazar in Sadar upazila of Habiganj district five people, including Kibria, were killed and 70 others injured in a grenade attack on a public rally of local Awami League.

BNP Leader held

Police has arrested A leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) from Kolbakhani area at Sahi Eidgah under Sylhe on early Wednesday.

The arrested person was identified as Md. Adbullah Shafi Sahed, organizing secretary of 5no ward BNP.
