Sundarbans Raksha Jatiya Committee convener Advocate Sultana Kamal has urged the government to stop Rampal power project for the sake of world heritage site Sundarbans.
She made the call while addressing a press conference at the National Press club in the capital on Saturday.
Sultana Kamal expressed hope that the government will realize the fact and will scrap the project.
“Sundarbans is saving people from natural disasters but we are going to destroy the Sundarbans building a power project,” She said.
“If the government builds Rampal power project there, the Saundarbans will be destroyed someday,” Sultana Kamal added.
On July 12, the government signed an agreement with an Indian firm to set up the India-Bangladesh joint venture plant on the bank of the Pashur River, disregarding protests.
The $1.49 billion plant is likely to start producing electricity in 2019. Seventy percent of the project cost would be provided by Indian Exim Bank as loan. The governments of Bangladesh and India will share 30% of the rest of the amount equally.
