Thundershower, hailstorm

An old women was killed by house collapse  at a village in Chattak on Thursday morning while people of many areas faced power outages for up to 15 hours amid thundershower with hailstorm between Thursday Afternoon and Friday morning.

Besides, the hailstorm damaged the Boro crops in northern districts while thundershower damaged many makeshift houses in Sylhet Division. Standing Boro paddy worth Tk 263.2 million has been damaged in the Sylhet division .

Of the total 337,452 hectares of land in the affected upazilas in 4 districts, at least 1500 hectares of crop lands were totally damaged due to the inundation by the gushing and stagnant waters while the partially affected area were 7000 hectares in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj and Habiganj districts, informed an official in the DAE’s Sylhet Divisional office this afternoon on the basis of reports from the districts.

According to the preliminary estimates, the loss in term of crop has been estimated to be 11089 tonnes of rice worth Tk 263.2 million. Highest damage worth Tk 115.19 million has been estimated in Sylhet district while Tk 62.45 million was in Moulvibazar district, while and it was worth Tk 76.5 million in Habiganj. The damage in Sunamganj district was worth over Tk over 9.05 million.

The affected upazilas in Sylhet district are Dakshin Surma, Balaganj, Fenchuganj, Beanibazar, Golapganj, Companiganj, Sylhet sadar, Gowainghat and Kanaighat while affected upazilas in Moulvibazar includes, Barlekha, Moulviobazar Sadar, Kulaura, Srimangal, Rajnagar, Komolganj and Juri. Affected Upozilas in Habiganj includes, Habiganj sadar, Baniachang, Madhabpur, Bahubal, Lakhai and Nabiganj and in sunamganj the affected areas are in Jogonnathpur, Derai, Shulla, Tahirpur and Biswambharpur

A number of substations involved in power transmission and distribution had become dysfunctional while power distribution lines snapped and distribution transformers exploded in areas of Sylhet divisions during the thundershower and hailstorm, power sector officials said.

They said that power supply restoration to rural areas might take more time.

The demand for power had dropped up to 1,500MW after the thundershower had begun in the Thursday  past midnight,

Anwar Hossain, a resident of Dargha gate area in City , said the power supply resumed about 3:00pm, 15 hours after the outage began, as a transformer of the area exploded during thunderstorm.

In a meeting recently, the ruling party lawmakers and upazila chairmen of Sunamganj district held Water Development officials responsible for not taking necessary steps to protect the embankments in haor areas. They appealed to the prime minister to take actions against the persons responsible.

Visiting the badly affected Sunamganj district On Friday Additional Secretary of Agriculture Md Mossarrof Hussain said crop loss in the affected area of greater Sylhet would be around 90 percent.

The government would take up a special programme to help the affected farmers in the Sylhet region, he said.

4 houses gutted

Four  houses were gutted as a fire broke out in Tatly area of the Dakshin Surma in early hours of Saturday.

Dakshin Surma Fire Station in-charge said the fire broke out from an electric-short circuit in of the area around 5:00am in Kahir Miah House at Darogabari in Tatly and engulfed four other Houses adjacent to it.

On information, three fire-fighting units rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control..

The affected House Owner Kahir Miah said that the extent of loss could go up to Tk 10 lakh.
