Landslides in some places of Rangamati, traffic blocked

Landslides occurred in at least 20 spots of Rangamati due to continuous rains. However, there was no loss of life on Thursday morning.
Road communication was cut off for about two hours due to a landslide in Kalabagan area of Ghagra on the Rangamati-Chittagong road.
Sabuj Chakma, executive engineer of Sauz Rangamati Division, said that a landslide occurred in Kalabagan area of Rangamati-Chittagong highway on Thursday morning. However, the people of our road department went and removed the soil from the road and normalized the traffic after an hour. On the other hand, the Rangamati-Khagrachari regional road has been submerged in water and the traffic of Rangamati and Khagrachari districts has been closed since morning.
Besides, Rangamati-Khagrachari inter-district traffic is still closed due to water on the road in Mahalchari area. 20 houses of Asharyan project have been drowned in Ichamati canal and Kaukhali canal of Kaukhali upazila of the district.
Meanwhile, 250 tourists who came to Sajek in Baghaichhari Upazila of the district could not leave Sajek even today. Tourists have been stranded since yesterday as the water in the Kachalong river has risen and the roads have sunk in several places in Khagrachari-Sajek.
Baghaichhari Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Shirin Akhter said, “So far no decision has been taken to take the tourists by alternative means. They have to remain Sajek today. The flood situation in the upazila has further deteriorated.” While 20 villages were inundated till Wednesday evening, several more villages were inundated by night rain. So far 55 shelters have been opened.
Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mosharrf Hossain said, “Though there have been several small and big landslides in the district, no casualty has occurred anywhere.” As the flood situation worsened in Baghaichari, around 2,000 people stayed in shelters.
Besides, one thousand 366 people are at risk of landslides in Rangamati Sadar. 75 shelters have been opened to avoid loss of life. The army, police and fire services are working to avoid the risk.
