Sundarbans flooded, biodiversity threatened

Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, is floating in two feet of water. Due to strong tides, several areas have been submerged due to the river water flowing over the boundary at a height of 4 feet. Several major parts of the Sundarbans in Morelganj and Mongla parts of Bagerhat district have been damaged.
Biodiversity is under threat due to inundation of 4 feet high tide in these areas. Meanwhile, the water pressure is higher in the lower areas inside the forest.
The entire Sundarbans is inundated with high tides of 2-4 feet in places. However, no damage to wildlife has been seen yet. Sub-Divisional Engineer of Bagerhat District Water Development Board, Kumar Swastik, said that due to full moon, heavy rains and rough sea, the water level in Mongla Pasur and Mongla rivers has increased compared to normal.
The water of these two rivers is flowing 4 feet above the danger line. The lower part of the Mongla coast is being flooded. Salim said that the water pressure is very high for the last two to three days.
The ferry is submerged in water. Jamal Halder, a resident of Joymanirghol upazila, said that the water of Pasur River has entered the houses and the shrimp cages have sunk. Azad Kabir said that the water inside the Sundarbans has increased for the past three days. Roads of Karamjal tourist center along with forests have been submerged.
However, there was no damage to the wild animals of the forest and Karamjal in the water. He also said that because of the high hills inside the forest, the wild animals can take shelter there.
