Justice Manik sent to Sylhet jail; eggs, shoes thrown at him

A court in Sylhet has sent retired Supreme Court justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik to prison.
Earlier, he was taken to the court of Sylhet judicial magistrate-1 Alamgir Hossain at 4:10pm on Saturday (August 24). Witnesses said many people hurled eggs and shoes at Justice Manik when he was being produced before the court. Even, several people tried to attack him. Then he was taken to the court amid tight security measures.
On Friday night, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel detained Manik when he was trying to flee to India through Dona border under Kanaighat upazila.
Then the BGB personnel handed him over to the Kanaighat Police Station early Saturday morning. Police said a case was filed against him.
According to sources, he was attempting to flee to India. A case was filed with Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate(CMM) court on Thursday against AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSoD) President Hasanul Haque Inu for making derogatory remarks about BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.

After a hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to submit a report after an investigation.

According to the petition of the complainant, Justice Manik made derogatory comments about Ziaur Rahman on October 3, 2022 at a talk show aired by “Channel i”, in which Manik said “Ziaur Rahman was not a freedom fighter , he was a Razakar”.
Justice Manik, who retired in September 2015, was known for his controversial statements during the tenure of the ousted Awami League government. Recently, he faced legal troubles, with cases filed against him for making objectionable comments about former President Ziaur Rahman, founder of BNP.
Following the resignation and departure of Sheikh Hasina on August 5 amid a student movement, several leaders and officials from the previous government have gone into hiding, and some have been arrested.
